Why Do Dentists Sometimes “Watch” Teeth?

By July 17, 2017Ask the Expert

Our outer layer of tooth is called enamel, it is the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel acts like a helmet around the softer inner layers of tooth structure. Defects, such as decalcified spots or small cracks, can form within the enamel. This leaves the tooth more vulnerable to form a cavity from the decalcification or fracture from the crack. Sometimes these defects are small and do not require treatment at the time of diagnosis. We note the size and appearance of the defects so we can monitor at future recalls before recommending treatment.
